My reading tip this week is this Verge article which adroitly addresses the false notion of LLM intelligence and at the same time, linguistic determinism. The incorrect belief that language is where intelligence originates. It’s a topic I’m oft frustrated with as I see educators with the mistaken belief, that language is the root of intelligence, confounding language with thought itself. Language represents thought but intelligence/thought itself is still what makes learning happen and is the genie in the bottle. Language is but a result of thought (with a small feedback loop).
