ELT Buzz Digest - Feb. 25th
All the news in education, language teaching and educational technology

Dear Teachers,
Find below our weekly digest for your browsing pleasure.
What can I say this week? I just finished watching the State of the Union Address and I’m at a loss for words. It’s a world of hype. Not just in politics but in ed-tech too. So I guess the president is just reflecting the B.S. of our current fake world. As a long time product manager and director, I put lipstick on a pig and made people think magic was happening under the hood. Not. Tech doesn’t work like that. Emily Bender sets some things aright about the Ai in Ed hype. Worth a watch.
It’s a shitty magic show but so many are falling for it - not a care that student outcomes suffer. Wizard of Oz behind the curtain stuff. AI doesn’t think. It doesn’t use any logic. It’s compute. It’s humans behind a curtain like Oz, deceiving and then letting us deceive each other. Sorry for my rant. “AI” (yeah, the term is more hype), has applications but wholesale use in class and allowing cheating are just beyond the pale.
Call To Action! A request. Have you subscribed to my ELT Buzz English YouTube channel yet? Really making a strong effort and your support appreciated!
Best,
