Dear Teachers,
It’s been a busy week or more. Lots of “buzz” across the education and ELT universe.
I got a good laugh, an insightful one about this article that passed peer review. It was about student cheating using ChatGPT. BUT - written by ChatGPT! The 3 co-authors made their point loud and clear, following all the editors and readers. Speaking of AI - this article raises the possibility human writers might become extinct, think so?
Culture is such a huge part of language. Ron Morrain offers a very comprehensive and insightful post, full of teaching ideas for exploring culture from many vantage points with your students. Speaking of culture, the In The Same Boat podcast with Masha and Jedrek has a nice article on the topic. Highly recommend their weekly newsletter.
Another great “subscribe” is Katherine Bilsborough on LinkedIn. She writes about her week (each week) with a focus on the English language teacher as writer. Also, a must is Geoff Jordan’s always cutting, thoughtful pieces on his LinkedIN - Doing An MA Tesol blog. See his latest - a must read - Principles and Practices.
The Language Magazine I read vociferously. Their latest article Deconstructing English Learner Labels hits home. Worth a follow.
The ongoing genocide in Gaza is not only about killing people but also the destruction of a people’s culture and central to that is the war on schools, universities, history - the foundations of a culture. No more higher education exists in Gaza, that’s as low as it gets.
I’m currently working on an article on critical issues in ELT. See the intro. video on our Youtube channel - please like and subscribe to help our content creation there. Next newsletter I’ll share the full article. But what issue is most important to you in English language teaching?
Best,
David - ELT Buzzer-in-Chief
