Dear Teachers,
Find our digest of “buzz” in English language teaching below.
My highlight this week? Definitely a repeat from last week, AI Hype. Already, just a day after OpenAI’s latest release GPT-4o, we are coming to the realization that despite the rehearsed demos, showing rehearsed, backend guided “wow” moments (especially for teachers, Sal Khan’s with his son) - there was nothing much new really. Same hallucinations, same errors, same inability to distinguish AI text from human generated text and so on … Follow the one sane voice of all the experts, Gary Markus for some needed sanity and fresh air. Google is playing the same bait and switch tricks to increase excitement and stock prices - read their white paper about AI and education - how they propose to use students as “raters” - hey, why not, they will be free! And note the Orwellian title - Towards Responsible Development of Generative AI for Education.
Just another normal week in the land of Ed-tech evangelism. Sorry, next week back to teaching basics in the report.
