Dear Teachers,
Lots of “buzz” across English language teaching and education in general. I hope you like the look of our new format - see it below, the BUZZ.
I will start each newsletter with just a personal thought or two. First, please see my recent post about Current Issues In ELT. Any other issues that you’d prioritize for us working class folk?
My pet peeve this week? Definitely AI Washing. I’m just so amazed at so many teachers, even those highly regarded in ELT Ed-Tech falling for this. “AI Washing” is really just using AI to market your product - putting lipstick on a pig. We’ve seen it before with so many companies “Green Washing” and pretending to be so concerned about mother earth. AI washing, represents about 90% of all the “AI” labeled tools in the space. It’s a HUGE problem. Companies just took what they currently did and then credited it as AI “powered” or whatever … Beware, you are being cat fished, for sure. It’s worth a cautionary thought and valuable in our own digital literacy as teachers. The end game of AI Washing of course is to make it seem the product has added value - thus, more $, making your pay more.
